1.6T Ethernet

What is 1.6T Ethernet?

1.6T Ethernet, or 1.6 Terabit Ethernet, is an emerging Ethernet technology designed to support 1.6 Tbit/s of aggregate interface capacity. It is being developed through the IEEE P802.3dj task force as the next major step beyond 800G Ethernet.

A 1.6T Ethernet interface can use eight 200 Gbit/s lanes, supported by next-generation 224G-class SerDes and PAM4 signaling. OSFP is a key pluggable form factor for 1.6T applications because it supports eight high-speed electrical lanes.

 

Why is 1.6T Ethernet important?

AI data centers and high-performance computing are driving demand for greater bandwidth and network density. Moving from 800G to 1.6T doubles port capacity, but also creates new challenges for signal integrity, FEC performance, equalization and interoperability.

Testing 1.6T Ethernet may include BER, BLER, FEC, transceiver performance and high-speed electrical interface validation.
