A utility that records the route between one computer and another specified destination computer on the Internet. The utility also calculates and displays the amount of time each hop takes. Traceroute can identify where problems are in the Internet network. The utility (ping, packet Internet or internetwork groper) is often used to first check whether a host is present on the network before trace route is used.
