What is multicore fiber?
Multicore fiber (MCF) is an optical fiber containing multiple light-guiding cores within a common cladding. These cores provide multiple spatial transmission paths within a single fiber strand, increasing potential transmission capacity and connectivity density.
Why is multicore fiber important?
Multicore fiber is one of the technologies being developed to increase optical-network capacity without requiring an equivalent increase in the number of individual fiber strands.
It also introduces new connectivity and testing requirements because each core must be correctly addressed, inspected and characterized.
Key testing considerations
- Core identification and mapping
- Optical-loss measurement for each core
- Signal isolation and inter-core crosstalk
- Connector alignment and endface inspection
- Repeatable characterization across all cores
- Compatibility with the intended network architecture
