Delivering Rich Media Communications: It’s Time to Place your Bets on WebRTC

Mobile network operators (MNO) have been making considerable investments into the high-speed LTE and IMS network infrastructure in an effort to deliver rich communications services (RCS) designed to offer a simpler, yet more enhanced communication experience supported by a robust ecosystem and various architecture implementation options.

Marketed by the GSM Association (GSMA) under the brand name joyn™, the RCS upgrade marks the transition of messaging and voice capabilities from circuit switched technology to an all-IP environment. RCS and voice over long term evolution (VoLTE) share the same IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) investment and leverage the same IMS capabilities, and give consumers the potential to combine voice and SMS with instant messaging or chat, live video sharing and file transfer across all devices and networks.

However, despite the fact that MNOs are building and delivering these real-time communication services, generating new revenue remains a serious challenge compounded by the fact that MNOs are experiencing declining service revenue and customer churn on account of free over-the-top (OTT) and Internet-based services such as Skype and Facebook. The free and open web real-time communications (WebRTC) technology continues to provide many great opportunities to leverage existing investments by extending communication services to new customers, creating new services and augmenting old ones.

If you would like to learn more about WebRTC, how this exciting emerging technology can benefit MNOs, and its impact on MNOs’ existing IMS/LTE network architecture, download our Betting on WebRTC: Technology Overview and Architectural Impacts whitepaper. This download is the first in a series future ones will examine different deployment use cases for WebRTC-enabled devices and networks and services, and ways to ensure the reliable network infrastructure needed to capitalize on the opportunities arising from WebRTC.
