Raising standards: Demonstration at the ITU

In an effort to improve on various technologies, EXFO is continuously striving to develop new standards for the industry. I personally had the chance to contribute to the development of the ITU-T Y.1564 Recommendation, which was adopted back in 2011, and I had the opportunity to demonstrate a new product based on Y.1564 during a recent meeting with Study Group 12 in Geneva.

ITU-T Y.1564 defines a test methodology for assessing and troubleshooting the proper configuration and performance of an Ethernet network in order to deliver Ethernet-based services. The Recommendation has already gained momentum in the test and measurement industry, especially since legacy test standards such as RFC 2544 are no longer sufficient to validate today’s service-level agreements (SLAs).

At the meeting, I was able to demonstrate an FTB-200 chassis with an FTB-8130NGE test module, which is just one of EXFO’s numerous Ethernet field-testing instruments based on the ITU-T Y.1564 Recommendation that EXFO marketed under the trademark EtherSAMTM.

EtherSAM was developed based on the principle that the majority of service issues are found in the following two distinct categories:

  1. In the configuration of the network elements that carry the service
  2. In the performance of the network during high-load conditions when multiple services cause congestion

With multiclass Ethernet services now being deployed globally, products built according to Y.1564 facilitate the deployment of Ethernet services and also assist validation of SLAs.
