Hollow Core Fiber (HCF) Testing Solutions

Hollow core fiber (HCF) gives operators, hyperscalers, data center teams, and fiber manufacturers a path to lower-latency, high-performance optical networks. But because HCF behaves differently from conventional single-mode fiber (SMF), testing must account for lower Rayleigh backscatter (RBS), hybrid HCF/SMF architectures, wavelength-dependent latency, and performance variations across the operating band.

Reliable HCF networks start with the right testing

EXFO addresses the unique testing requirements of hollow core fiber (HCF), from lab trials to live network operation. Together, these capabilities help teams validate low-latency performance, detect impairments, deploy with confidence, and protect HCF networks in operation.

Hollow Core Fiber OTDR Test Kit

The Hollow Core Fiber OTDR Test Kit pairs a high-power OTDR with dedicated external PC analysis software. It is purpose-built to address hollow core fiber’s unique OTDR testing requirements, including lower Rayleigh backscatter (RBS) and gas filling events (GFEs) that can distort conventional OTDR measurements. The solution enables reliable HCF characterization, fault location, splice analysis, loss measurement, reflectivity measurement, ORL measurement, and length validation.

FTBx-570 – Single-ended dispersion analyzer

The FTBx-570 is the industry’s only solution for fast, single-ended CD/PMD testing. For hollow core fiber, it helps technicians validate dispersion and wavelength-dependent latency from a single location, using a single instrument—minimizing truck rolls and reducing operational expenses . This is especially important for hybrid HCF/SMF links, where latency and dispersion must be understood across the operating band to confirm expected performance before service activation.

FTBx-88810 Series – Lab-to-field testing, 1G–800G and 800ZR

The FTBx-88810 Series delivers full-rate test coverage from 1G to 800G, supporting Ethernet, OTN, Fibre Channel, and the full suite of coherent optics, including 800ZR. For hollow core fiber, the FTBx-88810 Series enables BER and latency measurements directly over HCF links, helping teams validate error-free transmission, confirm expected low-latency performance is achieved at the service level, and identify wavelength-dependent degradations potentially linked to gas absorption effects. By combining latency and bit error performance validation in a single workflow, teams can verify robust 100G, 400G, and 800G service performance end to end across the HCF link.

FTBx-5255 – Optical spectrum analyzer for the field

Paired with a broadband source, the FTBx-5255 enables visualization of attenuation profiles across the C+L bands with 0.017 nm resolution. For hollow core fiber, this wavelength-resolved view helps teams verify that low-loss performance is maintained across the operating band, identify wavelength-dependent loss features, and compare measured performance against manufacturer specifications during trials, acceptance testing, and early deployments.

MaxTester 945 – Telco optical loss test set (OLTS)

The MaxTester 945 Telco OLTS provides field-ready optical loss testing for installation, verification, and acceptance workflows. For hollow core fiber, two MaxTester 945 units can be configured as a light source and power meter to help teams verify continuity, confirm correct fiber routing, and measure total insertion loss and length on short HCF links or cables without splices. In field verification and installation checks, this OLTS approach can also help confirm reflectivity and support practical pass/fail validation before the HCF link moves into service.

EXFO RFTM – Remote fiber testing and monitoring

EXFO RFTM performs remote fiber testing and monitoring using spare singlemode fibers, referred to as witness fibers, that are typically present in hollow core fiber cables. For HCF deployments, this monitoring approach helps teams detect fiber faults quickly, localize issues remotely, and reduce the time between a break and corrective action. This is critical because a break in HCF can expose the hollow core to contamination, and longer exposure time can significantly increase replacement risk and cost.

CTP10 – Passive optical component testing platform

The CTP10 delivers an unrivaled passive optical component testing platform for WDM components and photonic integrated circuits. For hollow core fiber R&D and lab validation, it enables high-resolution attenuation and spectral loss analysis to help engineers assess wavelength-dependent behavior across the operating band. This is especially valuable for HCF, where attenuation can vary by wavelength because of fiber design, microstructured cladding geometry, coupling conditions, and gas-related absorption effects.
