Reaching 10G in Mobile Fiber Networks

Jean-Sébastien Tassé has more than 13 years of experience in sales and marketing in the high-tech sector. He currently holds the position of Product Line Manager in EXFO’s optical business unit, where he oversees the business strategy, roadmap and launch strategy of the optical spectrum analyzer and dispersion product lines. At EXFO, he is also business development manager for the market segments of submarine networks and fronthaul/backhaul networks (optical products). He began his career as Sales Engineer for Gentec Electro-Optics, where he was responsible for direct and channel sales in specific regions in the Americas, Asia and Europe. As Business Development Manager for the Thin Film Research Laboratory at the École Polytechnique de Montréal/University of Montreal, he was instrumental in delivering revenue growth in analytical services for companies. Jean-Sébastien holds a bachelor's degree in Engineering Physics and a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (optics) from Université Laval, in Québec City, Canada.

Driven to a large extent by the increasing use of wireless bandwidth, mobile fiber infrastructures or fiber-to-the-antenna (FTTA) networks are growing very fast. Indeed, the fast adoption of smartphones and mobile video streaming is generating so much bandwidth demand that unprecedented data rates are now being deployed in mobile backhaul and metro rings, often at 10 Gbit/s. 

This webinar will discuss the typical topologies and challenges of these 10G mobile fiber network rollouts. Although some of the common issues inherent to 1G or 2.5G deployments (such as fiber loss problems) certainly still apply at 10G, new impairments such as chromatic dispersion (CD) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) emerge due to the higher data rates and longer distances covered by the wireless backhaul. In addition, impairments such as optical return loss (ORL) have tighter requirements at 10G than at 2.5G. Accordingly, this webinar will examine common impairments observed at 10G in wireless backhaul networks, and present best testing practices to ensure trouble-free operation of these networks.
