For over 19 years, Mario Simard has worked in the high-tech industry, namely in optics and telecommunication. With EXFO for over 10 years, he has developed valuable expertise in FTTH testing. His recent areas of concentration revolve specifically around optical time-domain reflectometry and assisting customers in how to test their FTTH networks. This experience has been the basis for Mr. Simard’s latest work on the development of dedicated FTTH testing methods and procedures. Mario holds a university degree in mechanical engineering from Université Laval, in Quebec City.

Given the proliferation of applications and the ever increasing bandwidth consumption that results from it, maintaining high quality services at a reasonable cost is quite challenging.

Mobile operators are forced to evaluate and deploy new technologies and network configurations in order to increase capacity and coverage, namely:

  • Packet-based networks
  • Fiber not only to the tower but all the way up to the antenna (FTTA, RRH)
  • Small cells and Macro cells

This situation is not only having a significant impact on the way operators are deploying and maintaining heterogeneous networks, it is also impacting their field operations.
