IEEE and EXFO talk 5G transformation
What challenges are operators are facing in their journey to 5G? This was the question explored by Yvon Rouault, EXFO's Mobile Network Segment Manager, in the segment he chaired at IEEE ComSoc International Communications Quality and Reliability Workshop. Sessions included perspectives from AT&T, Nokia and Palindrome, among other industry leaders.
Yvon's segment, "Dealing with the Delta – Next-Gen Transformation," addressed how the early success of 5G services relies heavily on network domains like 4G/LTE RAN and core, optical network, Ethernet/IP transport network as well as mobile edge computing and more.
Topics included the significant changes required to these existing networks. In order to truly leverage 5G as a catalyst for new services – that is, to generate new revenue from new market segments – operators need to transform their network infrastructure on a fundamental level. Specifically:
- the NFV/SDN infrastructure must support closed loop automation, leading to zero touch and network slicing.
- the optical and Ethernet transport network must be ready to support much more traffic with a lower latency and better reliability.
- Security is essential to support sensitive services such as autonomous cars or e-Health.
The IEEE CQR International Workshop is held annually with the purpose of bringing together industry and academic experts to present and discuss communications quality, reliability and security issues as they relate to real world issues. The output from the workshops adds to the community’s body of knowledge and serves to inform, help form opinions, and to assist in the development of best practices and relevant standards.
