When upgrading metro networks from 1 to 10 GigE, the distortions induced by chromatic dispersion and polarisation mode dispersion will limit the distance that can be attained. When upgrading core networks from 10 (OTU2, 10 GigE, etc.) to 100 (OTU3, 100 GigE, etc.) and soon to 400 Gbit/s, coherent systems will be able to post-compensate the linear distortions, but to what extent. What are the limits? What are the best fiber-characterization practices?
