All-Optical Sampling—No Boundaries

With the new advanced modulation schemes that enable transmission of high-speed optical signals over fiber, research centers, network equipment manufacturers (NEMs)—and eventually carriers—need new test instruments to properly characterize these signals.

Like EXFO’s recognized PSO-100 Series Optical Sampling Oscilloscopes, the PSO-200 Optical Modulation Analyzer uses optical sampling, allowing complete characterization of random or repetitive digital signals up to 100 Gbit/s.

Distortion-Free Signal Recovery

One of the crucial elements to take into account when characterizing or optimizing transmitters and modulators is the recovery of perfect signals and waveforms. A distortion-free signal recovery is precisely what the optical sampling technique used in the PSO-200 brings when compared to electrical sampling. With the PSO-200, there are no bandwidth limitations—no impedance mismatch.

With high bandwidth and low distortions the PSO-200 is able to measure constellation diagrams with very high fidelity without the need for equalization or DSP enhancement.

What An Optical Modulation Analyzer Can Do for You

In optical communications, data rates of 40 Gbit/s and 100 Gbit/s brought about the development of transmitters using advanced technologies. New analytical tools had to be developed to properly characterize these new—and often coherent—transmitters. This paper provides an overview of the main applications for optical modulation analyzers.


This webinar reviews the methods and tools that can be used to quickly and accurately test 100G transmitters, like constellation diagrams, eye diagrams and error vector magnitude measurement. It also focuses on the differences between coherent transmitter analysis via optical sampling and electrical sampling. Finally, common transmitter impairments are discussed as well as a novel approach that uses masks to avoid having to interpret complex test results.


This webinar presents how Tx impairments can be identified and quantified by constellation-diagram analysis, with particular emphasis placed upon 100G DP-QPSK transmitters. It also discusses how complementing the constellation-diagram analysis with time-domain information may prove advantageous in a manufacturing environment.
