Maintenance and Troubleshooting

Planned or unplanned, maintenance is how network operators can certify a consistently high quality of service. With time, values of optical parameters may be altered by fiber handling and environmental effects. Network synchronization must constantly be monitored to minimize data loss through excessive pointer adjustments, and network elements need to be verified periodically for faults and alarms.

If a problem occurs, or if a maintenance procedure is planned, various instruments can be used, whether testing is performed over the fiber or transmission equipment, and at the optical, transport, datacom or application layer.
